T-minus 72 hours + West Ham debuts . . .

Finally, some news from the official site. It appears that West Ham will be announcing the new summer signings (plural!) within the next 72 hours, or by the end of the week, depending on how you do your math. Touted by the club website as “international strength,” the new signings will make their first appearance on the home pitch on August 7th, during the inaugural SBOBET Cup. Avram Grant will be taking the team to Germany on Friday for an eight day training camp, so hopefully the new signings will be able to join in time for the upcoming friendlies against VfL Borussia Monchengladbach and Panathinaikos. It’ll be an anxious wait to see if the signings are of the exciting “name player” ilk, or of the important-but-not-spectacular variety. So at the very least, two new players will be coming in.

Speaking of new players, the summer’s first signing, Thomas Hitzlsperger, made his inaugural bow against Peterborough United in Grant’s first game in charge.  Hitzlsperger was involved in the first goal of the game, slotting Carlton Cole through for the first score.  Multiple match reports are saying that he accounted himself well, and seems to be a real class player for West Ham.  Keep in mind that Peterborough are a League 1 team, but one can still be optimistic about his play.  Here’s to hoping that he can maintain good form throughout the Premier League season, against tougher opposition.

Avram Grant’s first game in charge resulted in a 2-1 victory, with a strong side named for the opening 45 minutes and academy youngsters playing most of the second half.  In what may be a sign of things to come, Grant opened up in a 4-3-3 formation, with 2 wingers playing alongside Cole up front.  Grant showed that he was adaptable last season with Portsmouth, using a variety of formations despite his previous affinity for the 4-5-1.  The upcoming scrimmages and friendlies will provide more insight into what he will be using, especially integrating the new players coming in.  The next couple days are going to be interesting, to say the least!
