U.S. national team striker Edson Buddle’s agent confirmed on Monday that the player is currently on trial at West Ham. The 30-year-old Buddle is currently plying his trade at 2-Bundesliga side Ingolstadt although he appears to be surplus requirements at a club looking to reduce its payroll. He is the German’s club leading scorer this season with 6 goals in 16 games and is a strong, mobile striker for the American national team. I remember watching Buddle come through the ranks of our local MLS team, the Columbus Crew, although he didn’t really blossom until he moved to the LA Galaxy in 2008. It’ll be interesting to see if he is signed on and how he’ll fit into a crowded striker situation at West Ham. With Sam Baldock out with an injury, West Ham is down to three first team strikers so Buddle may be able to provide some depth to what has been an underwhelming strike force, aside from Carlton Cole.

West Ham’s famous Academy produced a nice, albeit unintended, debut for young Dan Potts on Saturday. Kudos to the boy for a strong performance at left back against Barnsley. Starting the game because of a pregame injury to Abdoulaye Faye, the 17-year-old showed that just maybe the new crop of youngsters coming through the system will be ready to contribute sooner rather than later. Son of former Hammers captain Steve Potts, Dan had just signed his first professional contract only a day before what turned out to be his first team debut. His rise to first team football is especially impressive considering he was diagnosed with leukemia at only 12 years old. An impressive game and congratulations to the youngster on his Man of the Match-worthy performance. Here’s to hoping for more from Mr. Potts and some of his Academy classmates.

Athletes are a superstitious bunch, and fans are no better. I blame myself for some of the struggles the team has endured over the past season and a half, since I only just realized my own abilities to affect my team’s fortunes. I can’t remember the last time West Ham won a game while I wore my jersey. I do however, remember losing to Liverpool 3-0 in a bar filled with Pudlians, blowing a 2-0 lead to ManU at home, watching Nigel de Jong of all people score from 20 yards out, and now checking the Reading score to see 2 red cards and another 3-0 thrashing. All games I’ve worn my jersey in so I’m doing my part this week by throwing the accursed thing in the laundry and hopefully washing the bad luck away. If nothing else, even if we drop another game I can lose myself in the smell of a fresh, spring rainfall.

Tough result to swallow, losing 3-0 on the road. I’m conflicted on my feelings about Jack Collison’s red. Yes he deserved it and shouldn’t have reacted the way he did, but part of me is happy that he cares enough to do something about Jimmy Kebe’s showboating. I think it’s fair to say everyone got what they deserved out of the situation. Collison sits for a couple games, Kebe is exposed as a prat, all’s well that ends well.

Always finding new ways to lose. Up by 2 aggregate goals with just one half to play, West Ham snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, conceding 2 goals in the second half and the crucial winner in extra time to bow out of the Carling Cup. It’s amazing how much of a one-half team we are. You can count on at most 45 minutes of solid play, with the other 45 being seat-of-your-pants defending and hopeless long balls to no one in particular. For all the positive play, smooth passing, and solid defending of the first half, the second half was equally as bad, if not worse. Carlton Cole had one of the great goals of the season but it was all Birmingham after half time. Kudos to them for taking the initiative and really turning the tie around, but it makes you wonder how many goals West Ham has to be up for any lead to feel secure. Good game to watch for a neutral observer, but the only good thing to come out of it is that we don’t have to lose to Arsenal in the final now. Lord knows how that would have gone, I would never have heard the end of it from my Gunner-supporting friends. Just let the numbness wash over you . . .

Good showing on Saturday against Everton. If you had told me before the game that we could go into Goodison Park and get a point, I would have taken it. Never would I have imagined the team playing as well as they did. The two points dropped may be crucial come the end of the season, but if the team can play the rest of the season with the kind of spirit exhibited on Saturday, we just might stay up this year. A real measure of the performance can be had by reading the Everton fan blogs – for the most part the opposing writers were as surprised as we were. Now whether that is an indication of their discontent with their own team or a reflection of ours is still left to be determined.

The Olympic Stadium announcement has been delayed. Personally, I don’t see what the hold up could be and the delay worries me that West Ham’s bid will not win out. I was under the impression that keeping the running track was non-negotiable issue, which would lead you to think that Tottenham’s bid would have no chance. Why you would want to tear down a brand-new stadium to build another is beyond my comprehension, but perhaps Tottenham’s deeper pockets means that they have more say in this than I would like. If West Ham doesn’t win out, I can see the more realistic outcome being that the Legacy Council will stick to their original plans and not have a football club move in at all. Nowhere was it said that a team had to get the stadium, so this may be the end result after all. Disappointing for sure, but if we don’t get it, then I don’t think any of the other bids should either. I’m not sure what I think about the plans to move in, but if it comes down to West Ham staying at Upton Park while Tottenham moves into our territory in a larger, newer stadium, I think most Hammer fans would opt for the move ourselves, regardless of the running track. It’s quite like the Red Queen’s Race in Through the Looking Glass: “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

Needless to say it’ll be a big game today against Birmingham. With Fredric Piquionne getting sent off, Carlton Cole still nursing an injury, and Victor Obinna still in enforced time-out for his red card, our attacking prospects may seem a little grim. Could there be a Benni McCarthy sighting, or will the front line be more of a “the future is now” party with Zavon Hines and Frank Nouble attending? It’s awful to think this way, but we don’t need a goal to progress, so a 0-0 scoreline might be possible. Then again, we may not need any goals from our forwards if Johnny Specs can continue to be our beacon of hope. Birmingham is coming off a thrashing at the hands of Manchester United, so who knows if they’ll come out roaring or broken. I feel that if we can survive the first 15 minutes of both halves, we’ll be in the final.

West Ham finally has a left-back who actually is a left-back by trade. Well, we had one before but if anyone can find where the 2008-09 version of Herita Ilunga is, please alert the proper authorities so they can take away the lazy, injury-prone doppelganger they replaced him with. Wayne Bridge signed on a loan from Manchester City until the end of the season with West Ham reportedly picking up his £90k per week wage rate. That number seems to have ruffled some feathers, rightly so, but if my math is right that adds up to just over £2 million for a rent-a-player for the remainder of the season. That doesn’t seem like too much if Bridge can plug the gaping hole we have on the left side of the defense and keep us in the league this year. Now making an average left-back your highest paid player on a 3 or 4 year contract? Absurd, so here’s hoping that 6 months is all we’ll need him for, unless he feels like being generous and signing for a more club-friendly fee. Not that it’s something he should do, because who among us would give up that amount of money willingly? City wasn’t held at gunpoint to offer him that contract. Either way, it’s good that management brought in some defensive help, because even if Bridge isn’t a top class defender, lord knows he’s better than any of the options we have on the team right now.

West Ham lucked into a win in the Carling Cup semi-finals against Birmingham today. I’m conflicted, and I hate myself for feeling the way I do. I’m not necessarily rooting for the team to lose, as an opportunity to play for a trophy at Wembley Stadium is priceless. But realistically, this victory will probably give Avram Grant an extension on his West Ham managerial stint, which I am not exactly looking forward to. Especially if Martin O’Neill is available and ready to step in, as the rumor mill says. Kudos to the team though, coming back to win while playing with 10 men. Now if we could just play a whole game like we played that first half . . .

Just a quick thought on last Saturday’s Arsenal game. What kind of team are we now? Have we really sunk so low as to view scoreless draws against top teams as a victory? Avram Grant is praising the players after a “heroic” effort, and I do appreciate the heart the team showed in holding up against a fluid, offensive Arsenal team for 88 minutes, but playing for 0-0 draws would seem to make us no better than an over-matched League Championship-level team praying for a result against a more talented opponent.

Never again do I want to see an unenthusiastic, uninspired performance like the last 75 minutes or so of the Newcastle game, but neither do I want us to be a team that will park the bus in front of goal and cling desperately to scoreless draws. West Ham is tied with Wigan as the lowest scoring team in the league, and losing Mark Noble for a month after his appendectomy will surely not help matters. I can only hope that no more 0-0 draws are on the docket for what should be three winnable games against Birmingham, West Bromwich, and Blackpool. It’s one thing to play defensive against a top-4 club, but if it continues against the middle and lower-tier teams, that splinter of doubt that’s been in the back of my head will start to grow into genuine worry about our hopes for Premiership survival this year.

I was excited to see the team sheet before Saturday’s game against Newcastle, as on paper, a front line of Carlton Cole, Frederic Piquionne, and Victor Obinna would be a terror mix of power and speed for opposing defenses. Considering Newcastle’s back line, who are well organized but by no means a match physically for our forwards, I saw this game as a chance to form a cohesive partnership that could run around and through any opposition. For 15 minutes this was the case as Newcastle struggled to deal with the movement and pace of the front three, with excellent service coming from the midfield. The rest of the game? Not so much. After that first, wonderfully worked goal, the offense consisted of booting the ball upfield at first opportunity and hoping for someone to run onto it. This seems to be the preferred offensive method when Carlton Cole is playing as a target forward, and therein lies the rub.

Cole has been getting a lot of stick from the fans for his recent performances. It’s almost too easy to forget that he single-handedly carried the team for the first part of last year until his unfortunate knee injury. Since his return he has been a shadow of the player he was before, with his touch deserting him and any speed almost non-existent. Yet for some reason, whenever he plays it seems like the rest of the team feels that he is the only option for moving the ball upfield. More often that not, it seems like the defense or midfield will win the ball and send it forward only to see it come right back at them from a bad trap from Cole. For all his size and physicality, I just don’t see Cole being that kind of target forward. He was at his best when the ball was played on the ground, with good movement and support from his midfield and wings. Asking him to be the primary hold-up player has not and will not work, but for whatever reason, when he plays it seems like that is the only way to go.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this season, the offense performed much better when Obinna and Piquionne were leading the line. Both player and ball movement seemed to be more fluid, and the team as a whole played the passing game that West Ham is known for. Even for this game, the lone West Ham goal came from a team move, involving Cole only for the finish, not during the build up. The rest of the game showed no hint of the same offensive tactics. Maybe he has never fully recovered from his injury, but Cole may be better off coming on as a late game substitute at this point rather than the focal point of the offense. I would think that Avram Grant would return to the lineups that were resulting in positive play and results, rather than the toothless attack that resulted in Saturday’s loss.

So Thomas Hitzlsperger is supposedly out for another four months after completely tearing his thigh muscle from the bone. A painful sounding injury needless to say and surgery is necessary to repair it. I was excited to see Hitzlsperger return to the team, as the reports from the preseason were saying that he was that little extra bit of class that a hard-working side like West Ham needed. Now we’ll have to wait until the weather warms up before we’ll be seeing who was touted as this year’s most important signing suit up for the team.

The silver lining in the matter, if there is one, is that Mark Noble’s form has been outstanding as of late and should he continue to play well, the team can continue to get some good results. I’m not going to go as far as saying that Hitzlsperger would be the best player on the team this year, but West Ham’s star injury curse continues unabated for another season. After seeing high profile signings like Freddie Ljungberg and Kieron Dyer getting hurt before ever substantially contributing to the team, and losing star players like Dean Ashton and Carlton Cole during the peaks of their performances, it’s almost laughable how bad the luck has been. In June when World Cup squads were announced, a part of me was happy that Scott Parker was not selected, purely for the reason that had he gotten hurt ala Ashton, the loss of West Ham’s single most important player would have doomed the squad before the season even began. I find myself apprehensively going through match reports after international games in which West Ham players are participating, hoping beyond hope that we won’t lose anyone else. No such luck regarding Hitzlsperger, and what makes it worse was that the initial injury was only supposed to keep him out for a couple weeks.

Well, such a hand has fate dealt the team. It’s good that the team has been able to play well without him. Hitzlsperger’s return will be like the brand new signing that he really is. It makes you appreciate the semblance of depth in the squad this year. There seems to be enough cover in the team to make it through a major injury, though I pray that the next inevitable hurt will not be a crucial player. Offensively, Freddie Piquionne and Victor Obinna’s emergence have kept Cole from being irreplaceable, and even now Fred Sears and Bennie McCarthy are tearing it up in the reserve league games. There is good variety among the midfield as well. There is skill and pace among players like Pablo Barrera, Junior Stanislas and uber-crock Kieron Dyer, and steel from Valon Behrami (who should be back soon), Radoslav Kovac, and Luis Boa Morte. Matty Upson and Manuel da Costa have shored up the central defense, but any number of players could step in on a short-term basis should any injuries arise. So on and so forth, you can at least appreciate the balance of the squad that has been assembled this year. Injuries will be unfortunate, but at least this year it feels like they will not be devastating. Anyone remember having to play a front line of David di Michele and Diego Tristan? Shudder.

Well that was an unexpected result, now wasn’t it? We knew the team had been steadily improving since the beginning of the season, but even with that I figured at best we could salvage a draw out of this game. The first victory of the Premier League season, and though it took a little longer than expected, it feels especially sweet considering that it came against our rivals Tottenham, a team that we haven’t beat in 4 years.

Avram Grant made a brave (and ultimately correct) move by selecting Frederic Piquionne and Victor Obinna for the side ahead of Carlton Cole, coming off of the duo’s sharp performances at the mid-week Carling Cup match. Since he became a regular first team player, this is the first time I can remember Cole being left on the bench as a result of team selection and not for injury reasons. Perhaps it’s what’s best for him to take a break, considering that he’s been nowhere near the form that made him so invaluable to West Ham last year. He’s not quite been the same player since his knee injury, as he doesn’t seem to have the same explosiveness and movement that, combined with his size and strength, made him such a handful for opposing defenders. Luckily Piquionne has shown the ability to be a similar target forward, and it was his strength in the air that won the goal and the game on Saturday. Obinna put in another strong performance, and his pace seems to cause all sorts of problems for defenses. I feel that sometimes he is too eager to pull the trigger on a shot, and there were a couple times against Spurs that he had the option to pass to a teammate in a better position but instead opted for a difficult try at goal. However, last year’s squad seemed hesitant to ever shoot, with the exception of Diamanti, so I like that we’re not trying to pass the ball into the goal. For me, Obinna is a must-start at this point.

Another impressive performance came from the much-maligned Robert Green. An absolute wall today, he showed why he was chosen as the England number one. Considering his performances in the World Cup and the first weeks of the season, it’s easy to forget that he has the ability to be a top notch goalkeeper, and hopefully this will help him regain some confidence that has been lacking. I loved his “up yours” salute towards the press box at the end of the game. It was the first bit of emotion that he’s showed ever since his problems began, and was a real reflection of how important this performance was to him especially. I was beginning to wonder if it was time for Marek Stech to get some playing time, especially after his strong game against Sunderland in the Carling Cup. The pessimist in me thought that it may be a good idea to play the youngster in a game that I didn’t think we could win. I figured that Green’s confidence had been shot already, and that missing a difficult fixture could help him recover. At least when I’m wrong, I’m spectacularly wrong. Green had a phenomenal game, and should maintain his place in the team for a while yet.

In short, it was a strong showing from the team as a whole. Midfield was bossed by Mark Noble and Scott Parker, but one of the few disappointments from the game was the subbing Kieron Dyer after 42 minutes. It could have been a lot worse, but Grant has come out since the game and said that it wasn’t injury but illness that forced Dyer out. Pablo Barrera came in continued to play well, and I would think he warrants a look with the first team sometime soon. Even Luis Boa Morte, who has been a favorite target of the boo birds at Upton Park, came in and contributed, sticking in with hard tackles and breaking up any flow that Tottenham had. I felt that the defense had their best game in probably the past year, with Matthew Upson and Manuel da Costa dominating and Danny Gabbidon holding his own on the left flank. I think we may have found our best pairing in the center of the defense. Oh, and Lars Jacobsen looks like a great signing now as well. A very solid (and natural) right back, he may not contribute as much offensively as, say Glenn Johnson, but he has really shored up a problem area for the team.

So ends a great week for West Ham football. A tie at Stoke City, a win at Sunderland, and now a home victory over Tottenham. That’s better I could have hoped for. A home fixture looms against a tough Fulham team, but the way we’re playing, we can give anyone a good match. I’ll sleep well this week knowing that we’re on our way up, and that we’re doing this without the help of Thomas Hitzlsperger. He’ll be back soon, and we can really get on with the season.

So this is what it feels like to open up the scores and see a West Ham victory. An away win after more than a year, even if it’s just in the Carling Cup, is welcome at any time. I wasn’t able to watch the game, but trolling the websites and match reports, it seems like 2-1 didn’t reflect the advantage West Ham had during the game. I always like to go to sites from the opposing teams, just to see what their view on the game was, and I’ve found that Sunderland’s fan sites are usual pretty fair. Salut! Sunderland, in particular, does a question-and-answer piece with Sam H from The West Ham Process, which I try and catch whenever we have a game with the Black Cats. Anyway, the fan sites have it going as a one sided game, and Sunderland manager Steve Bruce concurs that the better side won. Personally, I don’t get too frustrated with a large amount of missed opportunities at goal. The way I see it, the ability to create good chances is a better reflection of the team than converting one or two freak occurrences a game. I was happy to hear that Scott Parker had a dominating game, and that Pablo Barrera was able to make an appearance in the side today. The two were able to combine well, and hopefully it Barrera will be able to make an impact in league play very soon. His pace and skill on the wing will provide some of the width that we lack at times, and I feel that he and Thomas Hitzlsperger will make some very important contributions to the team this season. With a tie at Stoke, and now the win against Sunderland, let’s look for the good form to continue against Spurs on Saturday.

A good performance from the team today against Stoke City. Brittania Stadium is usually a loud, difficult place to play and the Stoke fans were in full voice once again. I have felt watching the team this year that we struggle the first 10-15 minutes in halves, so I find myself wishing and hoping that we don’t give up early goals and shatter any confidence the players possess. The game got off to a disjointed start, with neither team looking particularly sharp. Stoke City came out flat, and West Ham didn’t have any movement or impetus to break their midfield pressure. The first 15 minutes passed with barely a negative moment, and the team seemed to grow into the game. The rest of the half, barring the last couple of minutes before the break, was controlled nicely by West Ham, resulting in a Scott Parker’s goal. It wasn’t a pretty goal by any means, but it was nice to see the mayhem and confusion in front of an opponent’s goal for once instead of our own. The element of luck that has been missing from the season so far finally showed up as Parker tucked away the first goal of the game from a dead ball situation. Frederic Piquionne nearly doubled the score with a beautiful curling shot that beat the Stoke City keeper, but caromed back off the cross bar. The first half ended with the West Ham defense standing strong against the crosses and corners and Rory Delap long throws. You knew going into the game that the defense was going to be sorely tested, especially considering our inability so far this season to deal with any sort of balls in the box. Robert Green was once again shaky with balls sent into the box, but at least no major harm was done. Drafting Manuel da Costa into the side definitely helped in the aerial battles, and it was nice to see Piquionne and Carlton Cole back and helping the defense with their size as well. A well-played first half, with a score that probably was a fair reflection of the game to that point.

Tony Pulis is probably developing a reputation as 2nd half manager, as following his team’s inspired play against Aston Villa last week, his players came out with a completely different attitude again. Once again, the first minutes of the half were our undoing. Jermaine Pennant ran onto a through ball and lifted a perfect cross for Kenwyne Jones to nod home over da Costa. Jones nearly added a second ten minutes later, prevented only by a fine save by Green who tipped the goal-bound shot onto the post. Green has shown the ability to be a top-class shot stopper, but he needs to be able to command his area better and not give up any rebounds. Every cross into the defensive box or long distance shot makes me cringe, but he has produced some truly first class saves at times.

After the first Stoke goal, it seemed an almost certainty that a second one was coming. To their credit though, the West Ham players weathered the storm (aided by Green’s tremendous save), and slowly took control of the game again. The Hammers nearly got a second goal on back-to-back occasions, as Victor Obinna took a shot that had the Stoke keeper at full stretch for the save, and da Costa had a good header turned away as well. The run of luck that’s been with West Ham this game held, as a Ricardo Fuller header from a Delap throw-in came back off the crossbar in what was the last good chance of the game.

The final result meant that West Ham claimed their first point of the season, in a solid performance on the road against a team whose direct style of play has been a weakness for our defense so far. I’m glad that we’re a team who will at least try and play some passing football, as I find the Stoke City and Blackburn Rover style completely unappealing. I still feel that movement, passing, and possession was better in last week’s game against Chelsea, but the glimpses of good football were there again today. Considering our recent woes on the road, the point gained from this game is very welcome. This week sees us traveling to Sunderland for a Carling Cup match-up on Tuesday, and next Saturday has Tottenham coming to Upton Park. I hope we can keep on improving our performances and maybe nick some points from a strong Tottenham club.
